May I Have a Word?

Some times,
even in the darkest of times,
all it takes to shift from darkness to light
is a word

It may not feel like a dramatic shift
showing up instead like a small opening
or a change of direction, just enough
to move you away from where you were

Maybe it serves as a ladder
to bring up out of the rabbit hole
you find yourself in

Sometimes you choose the word
Often the word chooses you

Not long ago I was chosen
by the word "orchidaceous"

I didn't know there was such a word
I had never heard it spoken

I may never speak it myself
but the fact that it conjured up
the incredible beauty of orchids
is enough

The point is that my attention
moved into a place of wonder
And that space was incompatible with
whatever might be holding me in the darkness

That space won't be permanent
but neither does anything in life remain
always the same

So we must be appreciative
of each of these small opportunities
that bring a little light

If a door is open just a crack
it could perhaps be wide enough
to push it open even more.

Thank you for your wise observations, Carol, and the beautiful photo! I am lucky that my new Shin Buddhist practice of uttering a little prayer of gratitude whenever I notice some bit of positivity in my life (often a very small one!) helps me to rise up, even if it’s just a tiny elevation, above a downish state of mind. I think that your way of noticing, and mine, are vital survival strategies in this—horrible!—day and age.
